Summer Abroad General Information
To enroll in an OCU LAW sponsored summer abroad program, a student must then be in academic good standing. To participate in a summer abroad program, the student must have completed one year of full- or part-time law study and continue to be in academic good standing. Applications will be available online by January 23 or are available in the Student Services Office.
Space in the programs is limited, and available space will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis through the filing of an application and payment of a deposit. Applications and deposits for the summer abroad programs will be accepted early in the spring semester, before registration for on-campus summer classes. The student must sign required waiver forms. If you are an OCU student, you should submit the application and deposit to the OCU Student Services Office.
In addition to the program tuition, students are responsible for all travel costs, meals, and other expenses.
Important note: IF THE STUDENT LEARNS WHILE STUDYING ABROAD THAT HIS OR HER CUMULATIVE GRADE POINT AVERAGE HAS FALLEN BELOW 4.25, THE STUDENT WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY ACADEMICALLY DISMISSED FROM THE LAW SCHOOL AND WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO CONTINUE STUDY IN THE SUMMER PROGRAM. ALTHOUGH THE STUDENT’S TUITION FOR THE SUMMER ABROAD PROGRAM WILL BE REFUNDED IN THAT EVENT, NO OTHER EXPENSES INCURRED BY THE STUDENT IN CONNECTION WITH THE SUMMER ABROAD PROGRAM WILL BE REFUNDED, AND THE STUDENT WILL REMAIN OBLIGATED FOR ANY HOUSING COSTS CONTRACTED FOR.
The Director of the summer abroad programs is Professor John Cooper of Stetson University College of Law. Information also available at OCU LAW from the Office of Academic Affairs.
OCU LAW participates in an ABA-approved student exchange program with Bucerius Law School, the first private law school in Germany, located in the city of Hamburg. A part of Bucerius’ philosophy is to send all its students abroad for one semester during their tenure as law students. For this purpose they have been working with American law schools to send one to three of their students to American law schools in exchange for one to three American law students from each law school with which they have an agreement.
Up to three third-year OCU LAW students may spend their fall semester at Bucerius earning credit toward their J.D. degree. Classes are taught in English, with additional course selections taught in German.
Students pay tuition and fees at OCU and are allowed to use all the host institution facilities. As long as the OCU students are paying OCU tuition, they will remain eligible for financial aid. Health insurance, which is good in Germany, is also available.
To apply, a student must be in academic good standing. He or she should submit to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, by a deadline to be announced in the spring semester, his or her resume, a copy of his or her transcript, and a cover letter explaining why the student wants to participate in the exchange program. The student must approved for the exchange program by both OCU and Bucerius. Once the student is approved to participate in the program, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs must approve the course selection at Bucerius and the amount of academic credit given.
For further information, students may obtain a brochure about the program in the Office of Student Services, or visit Bucerius’ web site. Students may also contact the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs or the faculty sponsor, Professor Richard Coulson.
